Case Study – Hytime Marine Hydrogen Demonstrator

CUSTOMER CHALLENGE

  • Bramble Energy, a novel fuel cell stack and system manufacturer and EP Barrus, a marine power systems supplier wished to assess the feasibility of powered inland leisure marine craft with a novel PCB-based hydrogen fuel cell system.
  • Hypermotive have been engaged to lead the development of a fuel cell control system and the integration activities of the fuel cell system into the boat
  • The project is funded by a mix of private and UK government R&D grants

OUR RESPONSE

  • Integration services (electrical, electronic and software) for demonstration of new fuel cell technology in marine vessel
  • Delivery of fuel cell stack module supervisory system
    • controller hardware design and manufacture
    • control strategy and embedded software for stack and BoP management
  • Fuel cell power system supervisory system
    • embedded software development for system control, power balancing and life management
    • interfacing with vessel control systems
    • controller hardware design and manufacture
  • Support with on-site installation and commissioning of vessel

OUTCOMES

  • Stack control bench testing complete and approval for vessel installation achieved
  • System installation on vessel complete, commissioning in progress
  • Vessel testing due to start November 2023
  • Project schedule maintained with collaborative team despite issue count significantly above expected levels, due to novelty of fuel cell system technology
